Casco Bay Bridge opens for traffic - of all types.

by John Alphonse

Pedestrians, automobiles and a bicyclist head for Intown Portland Saturday on the new Casco Bay Bridge, which officially opened for traffic late Sunday evening.

Even Drew Bledsoe would have trouble dodging traffic on the pedestrian walkway: a lack of signage for bikes and peds has caused confusion. Seems like all the auto signs are up, though.

An improved situation welcomes bicyclists and pedestrians on the new Casco Bay Bridge, which officially opened on Sunday.

Unfortunately, the Maine Department of Transportation and alternative transportation advocates missed a huge opportunity to educate the public on bicycle and pedestrian safety: thousands of people over two days attended the opening celebration, and none saw any signage recognizing bicycles or pedestrians.

The lack of signage has caused a great amount of confusion among a number of bridge crossers who travelled by means other than automobile.

The lack of bicycle and pedestrian signage - alongside the fact that all signage for automobiles was present - demonstrates that alternative transportation advocates have a long way to go before equal representation in our transportation infrastructure is achieved.

Confusion exists for pedestrians crossing from the neighborhood off Beach Street. But when the temporary lanes to the old bridge are removed, the situation should improve.

Wheelchairs cross the new bridge using the designated bicycle lane, which is not marked as such at present. Without proper signage, even well-designed facilities are not effective.
